地HESTER和DIMMSEADLE的恋爱悲剧，霍桑试图唤醒人们对《圣经》中原罪和惩戒的再认识，表达了对清教
偏见和苛刻的不满，尤其批判了其对人性的戕害，所以研究《红字》中的《圣经》意象具有很大的意义。

Abstract：The images in The Scarlet Letter not only reflect the theme，but also show the religious influence on the author．By the
tragic story，Hawthorne wanted to evoke people’s re—recognition to sin an d punishment．He expressed his negative attitude to Puritanism
prejudice and mness，especially his strong unsatisfaction to the punishment of public explosion．So there were a lot of benefits to
study the images in the Bible in The Soadet Letter in order to learn this point．
It could not be said too often that Hawthorne belonged to a
culture for which the Bible was still the book of boks．There
was no end on secret evils in human life．Th e human society
needs unceasing purification．Th is was Puritan’s notion．It was
also Hawthorne’s opinion．In the Th e Scarlet Leter，he often
asked，“Had Hester sinned alone?”Minister Dimmsedale eom·
mited the crime of fictitiousness．Hester’s husband committed
the crime of revenge．It could be called sin that the punishment
and coldness to her of the public．Also，according to the Bible，
any bad thoughts，though it did not be taken into action，could
be called sin．So any sin，exposed or secret，had done or had
not done was“sin”．Hulnan beings could be said“sinful”．If
all of these were punished severely and tormented spiritually．the
life in the world must be glomy an d sad．By this tragic story，
Hawthome wanted to evoke people’B re—recognition to sin and
punishment．He expressed his negative attitude to Puritanism
p陀judice and mness，f0r it oppressed human’s nature need．
It produced a universal atmosrlhere that the deeds did not match
the words and people thought in one way and behaved in anoth．
er．Hawthorne espeeially expressed strong unsatisfaction to the
punishm ent of public explosion． “Th ere can be no outrage，me
tIlinks．against our common nature． 一一whatever be the delin．
quencies of the individua1． 一一no outrage more flagrant than to
forgive the culprit to hide his face for shame．” The sincerity of
Hester taught her compatriots to love and trust each other．They
hated Puritan autoeroticism and asceticism．Hester encouraged
man and women to fight against the severe autocraticism and as．
ceticism．She developed to be a new woman who strived for the
change of women’s position and fate．Th e minister told the pub．
1ic t0 be sincere．Even if you could not free from all inhibitions
to show your worst side，at least you should expo se some signal
t0 be inferred by others．However．this kind of sincerity to di．
vinity was at the cost to sacrificing humanity．Puritanism divided
the basic physiological need of human beings into unforgirod evil
to exclude．The result was that religion could not become man ’s
spiritual sustenance，but be man ’s hell on earth．In order to
lok for hereafter happiness，people must endure any torm ent
and pain in the hell ofthis life both in spirit and in body．Actu．
ally，the sincerity was the spiritual opium to maintain religious
authority and to oppress free life．Puritan power was extremely
bitter．Pu ritan doctrine deviatod human ity．Th is kind of divinity
was domed to die．Th e tragedy of Dimmsdeale was the disas．
trous efect of this sincerity．In order to learn this point。there
were a lot of benefits to study the images in the Bible in Th e
Scarlet I,etter．
1．Adam and Eve in man’s world_一Dimmsedale an d
Hester
On the original meaning，the letter A meant“adultery”．It
was actually a kind of original sin of ancestors．It was the sin of
the whole mankind．but not the individual sin．As Adam and
Eve stealthily ate Apple，they could win love，and learn knowl·
edge and differentiate between right and wrong，but they were
driven for Paradise．It showed the development of whole man．
kind．It marked a great change from naiveness to experience，
from ignorance to erudite，and from divinity to humanity．Thus，

self—voice．it emphasized human nature and the desire of
