Longston Hughes’writing style as seen in Early autumn

Abstract：The paper makes a brief introduction to Langston Hughes，one of the most important writers and
thinkers of the Harlem Renaissances，and is intended to analyze his writing style applied in his short story Early
autumn．Through arranging thoughtfully designed dialogue，meaningfully condensed setting and the proper point
of view，two sharp contrasting characters are vividly presented to readers．Early autumn also showcases Hughes’
talent in reflecting the protagonists’emotional changes and revealing complexity of universal human nature
through plain language，which provokes readers’empathy．

1．A brief introduction to Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes(1 902-1 967)was bom in Missouri．When he was young，his parents were separated．For
most of his childhood，he lived with his grandmother who told him stories about their family’s fight against racial
discrimination．In order to deal with feelings of loneliness and parental rejection，he developed a love of reading
books，which later grew into a desire to write．W hen his grandmother died，he moved to Ohio and atended
Central High School where he also wrote poems for school news paper．After graduation，he went to live with his
father in M exico for a yea and in 1 925 Hughes returned to the United States to aRend Columbia University．
Living in Harlem in New York City，Hughes experienced the Harlem Renaissance，the African American artistic
movement in the 1 920s celebrating black life and culture．In the following year he published his first book，a book
of poems titled The weary blues．In 1 929，he graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts from Lincoln University
in Pennsylvania．Hughes’first published novel was Not wi~out laughter，which later won the Golden Harmon
award for the best novel in 1 930．Then Hughes decided to make literature his career．
As his success as a writer grew,Hughes began to spread his m essage．Although he commenced writing as a
poet，he also wrote fiction，autobiographies，children’s stories and several plays．Hughes’writing showcases a
variety of themes and moods．His straightforward，easily understandable writing style that clearly conveys his
thoughts and opinions propelled him to become one of the m ost well—known writers of the Harlem Renaissance．
Hughes created a character called“Jesse B．Semple”，which represented his writing style：Just be simple．In his
work，he put forth images of African Americans，jazz music，and many more topics that have been a part of his
life．
